My abstract paintings and prints are characterized by a scenic arrangement of linear and geometric forms that interact to create visual rhythm and distorted landscapes. My work explores abstraction and the emotions that can be conveyed through simplified landscapes and scenes. By reducing settings to their most basic, skeletal forms, I strip away extraneous details and focus on the shapes and colors that convey a sense of movement and emotion. Bouncing between painting and printmaking, I work primarily with acrylic paint and ink on birch wood and canvas panels. Many of my images also have printmaking elements that incorporate monotype techniques with oil-based ink. Additionally, I integrate drawing and mixed media components using oil sticks, graphite, ink & brush, and oil paint. I use saturated colors and black ink as dominant guides to lead the viewer through the painting, creating a sense of rhythm and depth that draws them into the piece. Through this body of work, I seek to capture visual rhythm, movement and feeling that is often absent in traditional representational art.
Although my paintings are abstract, they are often inspired by the natural landscapes and urban environments that surround me. What landscapes are we involved with? Whether it is the current political landscape, natural environments, or urban scenes that bump and vibrate, I am constantly observing and interpreting the world around me, seeking to capture its essence in my work. Moments of euphoria, loss, contentment, surges of energy, chaos, revelations, and dysphoria can all be triggered or intensified by one’s environment and captured through expressive marks and abstracted shapes.
Ultimately, my paintings and prints are an expression of my emotions and observations, translated into a language of abstraction. By simplifying and distorting landscapes and scenes, I hope to evoke a sense of nostalgia and connection with the world, reminding viewers to reflect on the landscapes they engage with.
